“After the Battle of Kur, Lourna Dee — Tempest Runner of the Nihil — has escaped capture by faking her own death. But she doesn’t stay free for long. Taken aboard the Republic prison ship Restitution under an assumed identity, Lourna must keep her true nature hidden while navigating a world of prisoners, guards, and ghosts from her past.

Opening thoughts:

We’re continuing The High Republic series, which has been very good so far. I’m pretty excited to see how this story pans out. However, this one seems like a more isolated story focusing on Lourna Dee, so I assumed it would cover her backstory and her being imprisoned on a Republic correctional ship. I also noticed after listening to the first section that this is more of a full-cast audio production rather than a traditional audiobook — I personally prefer the regular novel style, but I kept an open mind.

Key notes:

Part 1: Retreat

  • As the Jedi boarded her ship and her Tempest was being defeated, Lourna Dee used her droid as a body double — making them believe she was dead and allowing her to escape

Part 2: Remembrance

  • She was given a second chance by a Republic officer and sentenced to 10 years aboard a correctional facility ship — the Restitution

Part 3: Restitution

  • In a flashback, Lourna recounted how she was rescued from slavers by Jedi when she was young

Part 4: Recrimination

  • Lourna ran into someone from her past — a figure from the military academy she once trained at, before she stole a ship and left that life behind

Part 5: Revenge

  • After being trapped under machinery and nearly dying, Lourna woke up in the medical bay; the Republic officer began trying to get her to open up to him

Part 6: Renewal

Reader’s note: Damn, I hate this guy. He has such a savior complex and is basically self-interested — forcing her to change and open up when she clearly doesn’t want to.

  • In flashback, Lourna became a Tempest Runner when she saved the previous Eye from assassination; she also informed him of a coup being planned by the other two Tempest Runners — but ultimately realized that the Eye would very likely betray her anyway
  • Sestin was blackmailed into killing Tasia, but Lourna did it instead to protect her
  • Lourna ended up killing the Eye slightly ahead of the three Tempest Runners’ agreed schedule, thinking they could control his successor when he took over — but they quickly realized they had miscalculated

Part 7: Reckoning

  • Lourna led a small group of survivors through the ship as Pan Eyta and his crew — along with his scavenger droids — attacked the Restitution
  • Lourna managed to defeat Pan Eyta and turn him over into custody

Part 8: Rebirth

  • Lourna killed Pan Eyta and took over the ship, recruiting the surviving prisoners as her new crew
  • She sent Sestin away in an escape pod so she could survive and make it back to her children

Closing thoughts:

This was an entertaining listen. The production and voice acting were very well done, and the story and character development were compelling. However, I still prefer the regular novel style as the series continues — the full-cast audio format with all the surrounding sounds can get a bit chaotic at times and is slightly harder to follow than straight narration. But otherwise, a decent addition to the High Republic series.

Nutshell:

A character-driven audio drama that digs into the backstory of Nihil Tempest Runner Lourna Dee — from her troubled origins to how she rose through the ranks of the Nihil, all while navigating life as a prisoner aboard a Republic correctional ship. A worthwhile companion piece to the main High Republic novels, though best experienced with patience for the audio drama format.
