Never Finished: Unshackle Your Mind and Win the War Within by David Goggins

Synopsis:

“This is not a self-help book. It’s a wake-up call!

Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins’ smash hit memoir, demonstrated how much untapped ability we all have but was merely an introduction to the power of the mind. In Never Finished, Goggins takes you inside his Mental Lab, where he developed the philosophy, psychology, and strategies that enabled him to learn that what he thought was his limit was only his beginning and that the quest for greatness is unending.

The stories and lessons in this raw, revealing, unflinching memoir offer the listener a blueprint they can use to climb from the bottom of the barrel into a whole new stratosphere that once seemed unattainable. Whether you feel off-course in life, are looking to maximize your potential or drain your soul to break through your so-called glass ceiling, this is the only book you will ever need.” -Audible

Opening thoughts:

David Goggins first book was insane and I’m excited to listen to this one. I’m glad to hear that he’s been doing so well and has continued to make an impact and inspire others even after the success of his first book.

      • Then you must become a disciple of discipline

  • There is never a time in your entire life where you should give in to that autopilot mentality
  • Once a mistake has been made in the heat of battle, the only thing that matters is dealing with the aftermath with a clear head

  • This world needs us to evolve into the very best versions of ourselves

Closing thoughts:

This was a fantastic book and a great follow-up to his last book, Can’t Hurt Me. I also loved that in this book he does the podcast sections in between each chapter, as well as the Evolution breakdowns in between. It’s a great way to get “behind the scenes” commentary on what’s going on in the story, as well as reinforce the main points that the author is making.

In general, a lot of the ideas are similar to the last book, but I really enjoyed how it’s a sequel because we get to follow up on what David has been up to since the last book. And it’s crazy how his life has gotten even harder and he’s still risen to the challenges each time.

One Takeaway / Putting into practice:

There are a lot of great takeaways in this book, and any one of them would be a great place here. However, my choice for my one takeaway would be:

  • The world needs us to evolve into the very best versions of ourselves

It’s the last point I wrote down for this book and I think it’s the most encompassing takeaway because it sums up what I think David Goggins represents. He is a guy who tries to become the most badass version of himself because he knows that it’s his way of making the world a better place. Him overcoming his obstacles helps to inspire others to seek their own better versions of themselves.

Nutshell:

A peek into the mind of David Goggins, one of the hardest and most savage people on the planet.
