Armada: A Novel by Ernest Cline

Synopsis:
“The new novel from the best-selling author of Ready Player One
It’s just another day of high school for Zack Lightman. He’s daydreaming through another boring math class, with just one more month to go until graduation and freedom – if he can make it that long without getting suspended again.
Then he glances out his classroom window and spots the flying saucer.
At first Zack thinks he’s going crazy.
A minute later he’s sure of it. Because the UFO he’s staring at is straight out of the videogame he plays every night, a hugely popular online flight simulator called Armada – in which gamers just happen to be protecting the Earth from alien invaders.
But what Zack’s seeing is all too real. And his skills – as well as those of millions of gamers across the world – are going to be needed to save the Earth from what’s about to befall it.
Yet even as he and his new comrades scramble to prepare for the alien onslaught, Zack can’t help thinking of all the science-fiction books, TV shows, and movies he grew up reading and watching and wonder: Doesn’t something about this scenario seem a little too…familiar?
Armada is at once a rollicking, surprising thriller, a classic coming-of-age adventure, and an alien-invasion tale like nothing you’ve ever heard before – one whose every minute is infused with author Ernest Cline’s trademark pop-culture savvy.” -Audible

Opening thoughts:
I’m excited to see how good this book is. Ernest Cline is best-known for his Ready Player One series and this book also got good reviews. I’ve been slowly getting into the sci-fi genre, so now I have a better frame of reference for more of these types of books.

Closing thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book and the world-building. I think what this book does differently from the recent sci-fi books I’ve read is that it has a very strong family theme to it. Zack longs to know his father who supposedly passed away when he was a baby. But then he finds out that his father is alive and has been on the frontlines of stopping an alien invasion that is threatening their world.
It has that sort of destiny trope, but instead of the main protagonist having to do it alone, he has his father to look up to and model after, especially since his dad ended up being the highest-ranked Armada player in the world.
A few things I wish the author explored more was his mother’s character and perhaps more interactions with her. She played such a small role in the story, but I felt like she could have added a lot more to it. Also I wished they could have explored more in depth the relationship between Zack and Lex, or at least spent more time developing in. If there is a sequel, I imagine it might, but I don’t think there is.
Overall, a solid book in this genre, and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys reading similar books.
Nutshell:
Zack Lightman, one of the highest-ranked Armada players in the world, discovers that the game was simply a training tool to prepare the human species for an impending alien invasion.
