Opening thoughts:

I was slightly putting this off because I didn’t want the series to come to an end — I really enjoyed the first two books. But I finally decided to pull the trigger and start the final installment of the trilogy (and yes, this is the conclusion to the original trilogy, though Sanderson did write more Mistborn books set in the same world)

• The master of the Inquisitors whom Vin freed called himself “Ruin”

Part One

Chapter 1

• A regal and competent Allomancer who called himself Elend Venture, the Lord Emperor, helped lead a band of troops against a koloss army

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

• Vin had told Elend that his allomancy was unusually strong

Reader’s note: What disappoints me most as we get into Book 3 is how Vin started off as such an underdog — someone who had to struggle and fight just to stay alive, who then unlocked her powers as a Mistborn and worked her way up to killing the former Lord Ruler. But now she’s been relegated to being a knife of the emperor, while her former boyfriend turned husband — an entitled, charming, and naturally gifted nobleman — now has unnaturally strong Mistborn powers and Vin merely supports him. She’s been vastly nerfed and he’s somehow become the main character, which is hugely annoying

• Vin and Elend managed to kill the Inquisitor controlling the koloss army, and then Elend used his allomancy to take control of them and stop the battle

Chapter 4

• Sazed and Breeze chatted, but Sazed seemed to have lost his faith in all religions

Chapter 5

• Vin and Elend discussed their almost hopeless situation — the Deepness was getting worse and they needed to find a longer-term solution

Chapter 6

• Marsh was completely under the control of Ruin, and he knew he would never have enough will to kill himself

Chapter 7

• He was a third-generation kandra, but had more skills and experience than the second-generation ones

• You could inoculate an entire village against the mists by having them stand outside in it — a percentage would die, and a percentage would be attacked but eventually recover, but afterwards, everyone who survived would be safe from the mists
• Vin chatted with a koloss; Elend also set his sights on reconquering Lord Cett’s old kingdom, as it was supposedly where the next cache was hidden

Chapter 9

• TenSoon was born seven centuries ago as one of the third generation of kandra

Chapter 10

• Vin talked with Sazed, as she wanted to help him through his crisis of faith

Chapter 11

• During TenSoon’s trial, he claimed he never broke his contract because Vin was the new inheritor of the former Lord Ruler’s will

Chapter 12

• Elend and their group planned how they would take the fifth cache while also consolidating the rest of the empire; Elend also wanted to know more about Kelsier — the man behind the legend

Chapter 13

• Marsh contemplated the inevitability of doom while being controlled; he also had more spikes added to his body, making him the most powerful Inquisitor, and was stationed in a camp of 300,000 koloss
• Even so, when the time was right, he planned to give his life to hopefully help the others beat Ruin in a pivotal moment

Part Two

Chapter 14

Chapter 15

• Vin talked with her koloss “Human” and he told her that the mists hated them; she finally accepted that the mists were her enemy

• Spook fought off several Allomancer soldiers before passing out

• Elend chatted with Demoux about the religion of the Survivor, while waiting for their army to be inoculated from the mists

• Sazed continued his trip with Breeze while contemplating his hopelessness

• A shadowy figure in the flames guided Spook to a vial of pewter, which he discovered he could now burn; the shadowy figure was the spirit of Kelsier, who urged him to escape so he could get revenge

Chapter 20

• TenSoon had a plan to escape — though he genuinely wanted to receive his just punishment, he couldn’t let it come at the expense of his friend

Chapter 21

• Vin felt like Ruin acted logically and resembled the feeling of consequence for an action
• Snapping was what the noble houses did in secret to their Allomancer children — allowing them to reveal their latent powers by beating them to the brink of death
• Elend contemplated how he didn’t like that he was becoming brutal, as all effective kings and tyrants must be; he knew he was naturally an idealist and didn’t want to be a coldhearted pragmatist
• Vin noticed that the number of people affected with illness from the mists was exactly 16%

Chapter 22

• The Terris people asked Sazed to be their leader, but he didn’t feel like the right person — especially at this moment; however, he was intrigued that they didn’t experience the same mist deaths as others

Chapter 23

• In Spook’s past, his mother wanted to give him up and his father wanted to kill him — but his uncle Clubs rescued him and took him under his wing

Chapter 24

Chapter 25

• The plan was to besiege the city and hopefully use diplomacy to take it over; assassination would be a last resort, but for now Vin would do some secret scouting

Chapter 26

• Spook was in awe of the fact that he was an anomaly — having two Allomantic powers instead of the typical one (or all of them); he was also contemplating the experience of seeing the spirit of Kelsier guiding him through that incident

Chapter 27

• Vin spoke to one informant but had a gut feeling and avoided the second; as she was flying through the city, she noticed that a Mistborn — or the mist spirit — was following her

Chapter 28

• Vin and Elend discussed trusting each other to save the world; they also came up with a plan to attend a ball to speak with the king and hopefully use diplomacy

Chapter 29

• Spook met up with Sazed’s group and showed them the hidden cache

Chapter 30

• Vin confronted the lead noblewoman and masterfully orchestrated her social strategy

Chapter 31

• Spook and Sazed discussed religion; Sazed shared how he had lost his belief and no longer preaches, while Spook believed Kelsier was still watching over them
• Spook made an astute observation: maybe Sazed stopped studying religion because that’s what Tindwyl would have wanted, and now he’s drifting into politics — which was her interest. Just as before she died, she helped him research religions because that was his passion

Chapter 32

• Elend confronted the Obligator about an alliance and truce, but was refused
• Vin had the realization that — contrary to her former belief — she was a noblewoman and deserved to be there; the other noblewomen looking to her as a role model was the validation that made her realize it
• They finally had their very first dance together, and Vin reassured Elend that he could be his new self as well as his true, old self

Chapter 33

• Now that TenSoon was back in a wolfhound’s body, his year of training with Vin combined with his centuries of expertise crafting bodies gave him the physical advantage and speed he needed to escape his sentencing

Part Three

Chapter 34

• Marsh/Ruin went into a town to kill and steal the power of a nobleman who was a Smoker (a Copper Misting)

Chapter 35

• Spook gathered more intelligence as he started getting used to his new powers

Chapter 36

• Demoux told Elend his theory that the people the mist spirit was displeased with fell ill with the mist sickness, and that the number 16 kept reappearing; Elend refuted it as coincidence but also tried to steer Demoux away from chasing a false theory when they should be finding the real cause

Chapter 37

• The enemy attacked their camp and Vin was excited — while she didn’t enjoy killing people, she loved allomancy and the challenge of using her powers against an enemy who gave her an excuse to do so
• Elend and Vin realized the battle was a distraction for the enemy to kill about half of their koloss in a sneak attack; Vin then took control of 1,000 of the remaining 10,000

Chapter 38

• Spook made the observation that Tin and Pewter were opposites but complements, similar to other allomantic metal pairings — useful to have both to balance each other out
• Sazed’s group started gathering information and heard about a new hero people were calling the “Survivor of the Flames” who they believed would overthrow Quellion, the Citizen of Urteau

Chapter 39

• TenSoon felt like the wolfhound body was actually perfectly suited for him
• A mistwraith who was granted the blessing of one of the four kandra blessings (Presence, Awareness, Potency, or Stability) gained sentience and turned into a kandra; some had more than one if they stole them from others

Chapter 40

• They discovered the art of how koloss were made: Hemalurgy — the same system used to create kandra and presumably Inquisitors, where powers are stolen or combined from others, with a built-in weakness as a result

Chapter 41

• Spook went into a burning house and saved the people there while fighting off the soldiers, then escaped

Chapter 42

• Marsh recounts the night he was unexpectedly made into an Inquisitor — not because he was discovered, but because he was extraordinary; the process was brutal and gory and required the sacrifice of eight other Allomancers
• Ruin used Marsh to enact his plan: controlling Penrod through a small metal spike strategically stabbed into his chest

Chapter 43

• The plan was for Elend to cause a distraction while Vin took care of the Allomancer tailing her, in order to escape unnoticed and find the hidden stash

Chapter 44

• Vin got caught in the trap when she was locked in the cavern

Part Four

Chapter 45

• Ruin revealed himself to Vin and told her he had been with her since the beginning — even as the voice of her brother Reen in her head

Chapter 46

• Sazed explained to Breeze that he cannot preach knowledge or religion when he himself doesn’t believe in it, as the last of the Keepers; Breeze argued that it might be needed now more than ever
• Spook came up with a plan to overthrow the Citizen, but said he couldn’t answer all their questions yet and asked them to just trust him; Sazed saw in Spook’s eyes that he genuinely cared

Chapter 47

• Elend had to deal with restlessness within the army camp and knew they had to take action

Chapter 48

• Vin read the last metal plate and discovered that the Lord Ruler was trying his best to keep the world alive despite Ruin’s constant influence; he tried to leave the storage caches as a lifeline and mentioned that he had hidden Ruin’s body well

Chapter 49

“A man is what he has passion about. If you give up what you want most for what you think you should want more, you’ll end up miserable.” — Breeze

Chapter 50

• Vin took a gamble and willingly got herself drugged, feeling it was a better chance for escape

Chapter 51

• Elend found a village being attacked by thousands of koloss and fought them until he eventually got them under his control

Chapter 52

• TenSoon used Kelsier’s bones to impersonate him and gather information on Vin’s whereabouts

Chapter 53

• Spook talked with the sister about the situation and promised to try and save her brother if he could; he also went into town showing his face, playing the role of the hero and building his reputation

Chapter 54

• Vin awoke sufficiently restrained and without a means to fight back; Yomen told her his plan was to execute her for the murder of the Lord Ruler, but she suspected he had other motives

Chapter 55

• Elend had a pseudo-conversation with the mist spirit, who seemed to be the enemy of Ruin and answered some of his questions — giving him hope and confidence

Chapter 56

• Sazed and Spook discussed confidence, faith, and hope — all things that Sazed had lost

Chapter 57

• Ruin appeared before Vin and started to gloat about his victory; Vin realized that there was, in fact, a way to beat him

Chapter 58

• Spook realized that the fake Kelsier was giving people powers and controlling them through the metal piercing their bodies
• Spook found a new resolve and sacrificed himself to activate the mechanism to release water into the town and put out the flames of destruction

Part Five

Chapter 59

• TenSoon met up with Breeze and Sazed and told them his intent to find Vin and help her

Chapter 60

• Yomen interrogated Vin, and she suspected he wanted to find proof that the Lord Ruler was still alive; even while Ruin was talking to her in her head, she had the realization that she wasn’t the heir to the Survivor — she was the heir to the Lord Ruler, because she did exactly what he did 1,000 years ago

Chapter 61

• Elend made it back to camp with his additional koloss army and decided they would attack as their best strategy at the moment

Chapter 62

• After Sazed had an existential crisis upon finishing his task of going through over 500 religions, he wondered why he was unable to find the answers he sought or have as much hope as his friends

“That’s what trust is. It’s about giving someone power over you. Power to hurt you”

• TenSoon revealed to Sazed the truth about the kandra: the first generation were originally the Terris people who were friends of the Lord Ruler; he offered them immortality in exchange for their Feruchemy powers, turning all living Terris people into mistwraiths, and the first generation was granted sentience through the spikes; this gave Sazed hope because the Terris religion was still alive in the minds of those original Terris people

Chapter 63

• Ruin used Marsh to interrupt the conversation between Vin and Yomen regarding the Lord Ruler’s hidden caches; Elend’s army was outside, about to attack

Chapter 64

• Spook finally awoke and told the others he urgently needed to get a message to Vin — written on a steel plate so the message couldn’t be altered by Ruin

Chapter 65

• Both Elend and Ham came to the same conclusion right before their army attack: don’t do it — return home; Elend said he would find another way to save Vin that didn’t result in killing innocent people
• Ruin took control of the koloss as Vin fought off Marsh, using the mists for power again

Chapter 66

• Sazed traveled with TenSoon as he explained the mechanics of their powers and the prophecy of Vin guiding Allomancers to the kandra homeland to save the world

Chapter 67

• Vin had a plan to trick Ruin and potentially draw upon the mists again

Chapter 68

• Sazed met with the kandra elders to convince them that the world was dying and the end was near — and that their religion was the only one out of 300+ that had survived this long
• He met the 10 members of the first generation, who looked very old and wore their original bones

Chapter 69

• Marsh killed the soldier messenger carrying the metal note from Spook to Vin — the warning about Ruin’s ability to control people through metal spikes

Chapter 70

• Elend discovered that the people taken by the mist sickness were the mist’s way of Snapping them — potentially turning survivors into Allomancers

Chapter 71

• The kandra’s task from the Lord Ruler was to store up all the atium — which was essentially Ruin’s power, or body; they hid it in secret with the Obligators under the Lord Ruler’s orders, to keep it from Ruin

Chapter 72

• Vin led Ruin to Luthadel, then began to fight 12 Inquisitors by herself
• Marsh ripped out her earring, which was revealed to be a Hemalurgic spike that Ruin had used to influence her and prevent the mists (power in vapor form) from being able to help her

Chapter 73

• Vin was born a Mistborn, and her baby sister was a Seeker; the small earring she wore was made to take her sister’s power and double her ability to Seek, thus allowing her to pierce copper clouds
• She felt immense power after absorbing the mists and felt like fighting a dozen Inquisitors with Feruchemy powers was not impossible
• Vin finished absorbing all the mist and defeated all 13 Inquisitors single-handedly

Chapter 74

Chapter 75

• Sazed saw that religious doctrine had to be combined with the people who followed it; it wasn’t the grand doctrines or sweeping ideals that seemed to make believers out of men — it was the simple magic in the world around them
• He learned from Spook that faith is about trust — trusting that somebody was watching and would make it alright in the end, even if things looked terrible in the moment; the conundrum was that if you want belief, you have to want to believe; it was all about your interpretation
• The kandra told Sazed that the mists are the body of Preservation
• A coup was enacted by KanPaar of the second generation and other guards against the first generation and Sazed, and they were tied up

Chapter 76

• The mists came from the same power that allomancy did — therefore Allomancers would feel connected to the mists by using their powers
• Vin discussed with Ruin while in her state of Godhood, still discovering her capabilities as her awareness expanded
• Ruin would be stronger, but they were currently balanced because the atium was the last piece of his power he needed to reclaim (still hidden) in order to finally destroy everything

Chapter 77

• Vin managed to get a message to Elend, telling him to go West instead of being tricked into going North

Chapter 78

• TenSoon returned and rescued Sazed

Chapter 79

• Ruin started to take control of some kandra until the first generation enacted the Resolution — pulling out their own spikes, which would end their sentience

Chapter 80

• Vin’s voice guided Elend to where Sazed was, being overwhelmed by the traitor kandra

Chapter 81

• 280 soldiers could burn atium, and Elend led them in a suicidal battle against thousands of koloss

• The koloss began to overwhelm the people in the cave, and then Marsh confronted Elend; they began to fight with atium
• Elend revealed that the plan was to burn up every piece of atium — which they succeeded in doing
• After Elend was killed, Vin gained the resolve to sacrifice herself to also destroy Ruin

Chapter 82

• Sazed went between the two corpses of Vin and the man with red hair, both oozing different powers; he wanted to reject the idea that he was possibly the Hero of Ages the prophecy spoke of, afraid he could not save the world from the end
• As he took on the powers, he realized he had the knowledge of 1,000 years from the Keepers — as well as the will and one mind to use both powers to create; from all the hundreds of religions and his knowledge of them, he found the hidden gems of wisdom and information he needed to restore the world to the way it was before
• He had the realization that studying the world’s religions wasn’t a waste — and even though they were not all true, they all had truth within them

Epilogue

• Sazed wanted to acknowledge that of all the people who had touched the power at the Well of Ascension, Vin was the most worthy

End Credits

• As all the survivors exited their caverns, they discovered the world reborn with much more color and plant life
• Spook found a message written to him from Sazed explaining that he tried to bring Vin and Elend back but could not — but reassured that they were happy; he also left all the knowledge contained in his metalminds in books for everyone
• Sazed told Spook that he had restored his body completely, and also made him Mistborn — as the people would likely look to him as a leader to rebuild society; he also suggested Spook figure out the last two metals that nobody yet knew about

Closing thoughts:

I’m really glad how this series turned out. Easily one of my favorite books in the fiction/fantasy/epic genre, and I think each book got better than the last. Even though the ending wasn’t necessarily a “happy” one, it felt like a very solid and well-thought-out conclusion to such a long story.

What made it feel like a great ending was that everything introduced was wrapped up with no loose ends. The conclusion also didn’t feel rushed — unlike what happens in a lot of Hollywood movies, TV shows, or anime and manga, where it doesn’t always seem like the authors or writers thought everything through from start to finish, and are usually pressured by external constraints to wrap things up quickly. That inevitably makes the ending suffer and leaves a bad taste in the viewer’s mouth about the series as a whole — even if the earlier parts were well done.

I think Brandon Sanderson’s reputation as an excellent fiction writer is well-deserved.

This was one of my favorite quotes, which encompasses the bigger ideas of creation, growth, and love that are woven throughout this entire series. True love isn’t trying to keep something the same, but allowing it to grow and evolve. And I think the characters we love in this story experience significant growth throughout.
