For We Are Many: Bobiverse, Book 2 by Dennis E. Taylor

Synopsis:
“The highly anticipated sequel to Audible’s Best of 2016 – Science Fiction winner, We Are Legion (We Are Bob); a book listeners are calling “so much fun”, “what science fiction was meant to be”, and what would happen if “Andy Weir and Ernest Cline had a lovechild”.
Bob Johansson didn’t believe in an afterlife, so waking up after being killed in a car accident was a shock. To add to the surprise, he is now a sentient computer and the controlling intelligence for a Von Neumann probe.
Bob and his copies have been spreading out from Earth for 40 years now, looking for habitable planets. But that’s the only part of the plan that’s still in one piece. A system-wide war has killed off 99.9 percent of the human race; nuclear winter is slowly making the Earth uninhabitable; a radical group wants to finish the job on the remnants of humanity; the Brazilian space probes are still out there, still trying to blow up the competition; and the Bobs have discovered a spacefaring species that sees all other life as food.
Bob left Earth anticipating a life of exploration and blissful solitude. Instead he’s become a sky god to a primitive native species, the only hope for getting humanity to a new home, and possibly the only thing that can prevent every living thing in the local sphere from ending up as dinner. “

Closing thoughts:
I’m so glad that this book didn’t disappoint! I loved that this second installment expanded the universe and continued the story of the Bob’s trying to save humanity while also trying to fend off the threat of the Others.
One interesting concept I believe that they touched upon int his book was how you’d think that being an “immortal” replicant would be so liberating as now a person wouldn’t be bound by time and space. However, we see that this is the opposite of what happens to Bob. He and all of the other Bobs end up being almost like servants to the humans, devoting decades of their own lives to helping them from going extinct.
On that note, I do like how the Bob’s still hold on to their humanity as they desire to build an android that will allow them to have a human experience once again.
Highly recommend this book and this series for anyone who loves the sci-fi genre. But I guarantee that you’ll be committing yourself to all 4 books in this series because it’s so good.
One Takeaway / Putting into practice:
I don’t really have a solid takeaway or “action item” from this book. But I will say that the part of Bob’s character I admire the most is how he’s true to his values of not abusing his power, despite how easily he could. He still devotes most of his efforts to helping people even though it hardly benefits him.
I guess I say I’d aspire to be like that. To remember to use my gifts and abilities to help others as much as I can, especially those who have no power to reciprocate.
Nutshell:
Part 2 of the Bobiverse series. The legion of Bob’s not only have to deal with keeping the human race alive, but also fending off the looming danger of the Others, a parasitic alien species.
