Hell Divers IV: Wolves by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Synopsis:

“They dive so humanity survives. Now they take to the sea.

In the fourth installment of the award-winning and USA Today best-selling Hell Divers series, the Sea Wolf sets out to search for the Metal Islands. Leading the expedition is legendary Hell Diver Xavier Rodriguez. After enduring for a decade on the poisoned surface, his survival skills will be put to the test on the dangerous open seas.

But storms, sea monsters, and the cannibalistic Cazadores aren’t the only threat to X and his small crew. Their mission will uncover hard truths about the history of the war that left humankind stranded in the air for centuries. And the fate of those still living on the airships might very well rest on this fragile and perilous journey to find a new home.” -Audible

Opening thoughts:

Three books in and I’m hooked. It’s a lot of nonstop action that leaves me at the “edge of my seat” so to speak. Even though a handful of characters have died and sacrificed themselves along the way, I’m so glad that my favorite characters are still alive (for now). It’s exciting to see that there’s actually progress in this adventure, moving from the skies to the seas.

Key notes:

Chapter 1

  • The Sea Wolf was under attack by some giant octopus. Aboard the airships, things were going relatively well and more egalitarian

Chapter 2

  • Les’s son Trey was finally back home and out of prison. But he told his family he wanted to become a Hell Diver and take his father’s place as a way to give back to the ships and all it’s people

Chapter 3

  • X and Magnolia made it to a small island. Even though their ship was in bad condition, X didn’t want to call for help as it would put their rescuers at risk. He told her that they were on their own for now

Chapter 4

  • Michael thought it was crazy that he was one of the most respected people on the ship for what he’s done, second only to X, who was considered a legend

Chapter 5

  • X and Mags were attacked but survived. However, Miles got taken by a vulture

Chapter 6

  • X managed to save Miles, but also noticed that their ship was drifting back into the water

Chapter 7

  • Magnolia managed to survive in the building as the giant hogs tried to attack her

Chapter 8

  • X decided to jump into the ocean off the cliff in order to swim to the ship that was now caught on some debris close to the shore

Chapter 9

  • Katrina, Michael, and Timothy reviewed audio files that Magnoila had sent, which were from the period of time known as “the blackout” when communication was disrupted, and people were confused about what was going on
  • They learned from a video that an AI virus created a simulated war that caused confusion, and for humans to wipe themselves out

Chapter 10

  • X managed to rescue Magnolia and escape a shark attack just as Timothy came back online and navigated the ship back to shore

Chapter 11

  • X was mad that Magnolia sent Katrina coordinates to possible supplies and boats
  • Deliverance headed toward the Red Sphere in Cuba. X checked in with Katrina, and Magnolia cooked them shark meat, which turned out to taste good

Chapter 12

  • Team Raptor unexpectedly passed through a small storm. Erin was hit but Michael managed to grab her before pulling his chute and then landed in the water. She was hit by lightning but they revived her with adrenaline pills after they got out of the water

Chapter 13

  • The Seawolf sustained engine damage from the waves so they were stuck unless they could get the sails working
  • Team Raptor searched the ancient ships they were hiding out in. Katrina was anxious because she didn’t know the status of the team due to the blocking electrical storm

Chapter 14

  • Les and Leila managed to contact Katrina to let them know their status. Their new mission was to get the smaller stealth boats operational

Chapter 15

  • Team Raptor was under attack by machine AI’s designed to kill humans, and Katrina made the decision to dive to the surface herself, along with some of the new recruits, as this was her only option

Chapter 16

  • Katrina and her team helped rescue team Raptor, though Erin and Ramon died in the battle, and Michael was severely wounded

Chapter 17

  • Back on the Navy ship with Team Raptor, they were trying to find medical supplies to help Edgar and Michael. They decided they needed to find the Seawolf

Chapter 18

  • The Cazadores managed to kidnap Magnolia and Miles. X prepared to go after them

Chapter 19

  • Magnolia was captured and was able to see the floating metal islands, which had a whole forest growing on them

Chapter 20

  • X attacked and battled 3 casadores ships

Chapter 21

  • Katrina made contact with Samson and told her told him the plan that they were to regroup at the metal islands and prepare for war against the Cazadores
  • They brought magnolia to El Pulpo, the king of the land. But then explosions caused by X blew up one of the platforms

Chapter 22

  • Michael received X’s last transmission recording to him to wish him luck on their fight for the islands

Chapter 23

  • X took on dozens of soldiers by himself, and when he ran out of steam, he earned their respect, and they told him he was a Cazadores soldier

Closing thoughts:

Loved this part in the saga. The characters were well done, and I loved how the story unfolds. I was fully engaged from start to finish, and can’t wait to continue the journey with the next book.

Nutshell:

X and Magnolia set sail to find the metal islands while Michael and the rest of the Hive and Deliverance prepare for war against the Cazadores.
