Synopsis:

“Long before the events of The Phantom Menace, the galaxy is enjoying a golden era of peace and prosperity under the High Republic. The Republic has spread to the Outer Rim, the Jedi are at the height of their power, and the newly completed hyperspace lanes allow civilizations to connect like never before. It is a hopeful time — but hope is fragile.

When a passenger freighter called the Legacy Run is destroyed in hyperspace, its debris scatters across multiple systems in the Outer Rim, threatening billions of lives. As the Jedi race to contain the disaster, a ruthless and enigmatic new villain emerges from the shadows — and a terrifying enemy unlike anything the Republic has faced before: the Nihil.” -Audible

Opening thoughts:

I’m continuing my Star Wars kick by digging into a new saga that’s not Sith-related — this one goes back into the past during the era of the High Republic, set about 200 years before the Skywalker Saga. It was a refreshing change of pace compared to the Dark Side-related books I’d been reading, and I had a feeling it would be a great one

Key notes:

Part One: The Great Disaster

Chapter 1

  • Captain Hedda Casset managed to avoid the head-on collision with the debris in the hyperspace lane, but the maneuver was too much for the Legacy Run to handle — and it started to break apart

Chapter 3

  • The minister of the Hetzal System sent a message to the entire system to evacuate immediately, promising the Republic would do its best to help citizens

Chapter 5

  • The Jedi made their way to the Hetzal System to help citizens overwhelmed by fear and panic

Chapter 6

  • The Republic ship tried to stop the incoming debris using missiles — but it failed

Chapter 8

  • Jedi Padawan Burryaga Agaburry, whose Force ability allowed him to sense the emotions of others, detected living passengers within some of the debris — transforming the mission from an evacuation into a rescue

Chapter 9

  • Bell Zettifar and his master, Loden Greatstorm, tried to resolve the situation with a crowd of frightened commoners attempting to board the ship of a wealthy family within a guarded compound

Chapter 10

  • An engineer asked the Jedi masters if they could use the Force to slow the projectiles — just enough to keep them intact — which would drastically improve the chances of containing the debris without triggering an explosion

Chapter 11

  • Jedi Master Avar Kriss, whose unique ability allowed her to hear the Force as a song, was searching for the missing note — the key to coordinating the Jedi response and turning the tide of the disaster

Chapter 12

  • The crew now faced a dual challenge: repairing the ship while continuing to help survivors

Chapter 13

  • Bell Zettifar and Loden Greatstorm managed to stop the violent marauders who were taking advantage of the chaos

Chapter 15

  • The crew and the Jedi worked together — using cables and the Force — to successfully rescue the innocent passengers trapped inside the Legacy Run’s escape pod

Chapter 16

  • The captain sacrificed himself so the entire crew could escape before the reactor exploded

Chapter 17

  • Jedi Master Avar Kriss successfully coordinated an impossible effort — uniting Jedi across the galaxy through the Force like a shared song — to push the massive debris fragment away from the sun before it could ignite a catastrophe that would have doomed billions of lives

Part Two: The Hunt

Chapter 19

  • Chancellor Lina Soh and her representatives discussed the Legacy Run disaster — how to handle the aftermath, what caused it, and how to prevent it from happening again

Chapter 21

  • The Nihil were a cutthroat and savage group with formidable forces — but they knew the Legacy Run disaster would draw the attention of the Jedi’s investigation toward them

Chapter 22

  • The Nihil attacked a family on Elphrona to extort money, but the family fought back with their mining droids

Chapter 23

  • Avar Kriss and another Jedi met with members of the San Tekka clan — the galaxy’s foremost hyperspace experts — who insisted a collision in hyperspace was essentially impossible, though it was clear they weren’t telling the whole truth

Chapter 24

  • Marchion Ro was exploiting Mari San Tekka, an elderly Force-sensitive woman with an inexplicable gift for navigating impossible hyperspace routes — her abilities were the secret behind the Nihil’s unmatched mobility across the galaxy

Chapter 25

  • When the Jedi arrived at the homestead of the abducted family on Elphrona, they were ambushed by mole mines

Chapter 26

  • Burryaga Agaburry, the Wookiee Jedi Padawan whose Force talent let him sense the emotions of others, found a boy who confessed he felt guilty — believing his parents’ deaths in the disaster were somehow his fault

Chapter 27

  • The kidnapped family managed to delay the Nihil while help was closing in

Chapter 28

  • Kassav attempted to extort a planetary system using the Emergences as leverage — but the plan went catastrophically wrong, and billions of people died as a result

Chapter 29

  • Kevan Tarr, an engineer from Hetzal obsessed with understanding systems, rigged up 57,000 droids to run a simulation and trace the origin of the Legacy Run disaster
  • Two Jedi joined him to assist — using the Force to create rain and cool the overheating droid array before it burned out

Chapter 30

  • The Jedi managed to rescue one of the injured hostages and arranged for her to receive treatment, while the rest of the team continued pursuing the Nihil

Chapter 31

  • Lourna Dee attempted to destroy the Legacy Run fragment containing the flight recorder, but the Jedi and the rescue team intercepted her missiles — at the cost of some of their own

Chapter 32

  • The Nihil kidnappers were running out of options with the Jedi in hot pursuit

Chapter 33

  • Chancellor Lina Soh and her task force reviewed what they had learned — the Nihil were responsible for the Legacy Run disaster, though possibly by accident — and agreed that the hyperspace lanes could not be reopened until the threat was fully resolved

Chapter 34

  • Marchion Ro held a meeting with the Nihil leaders, telling them he had a plan to turn the situation to their advantage

Chapter 35

  • Bell Zettifar leaped from his Vector (Jedi starfighter) to save Bailen, a young girl thrown from the Nihil ship mid-flight — overcoming his long-standing mental block and finally grasping a crucial truth: the Force exists to save others — and landed safely from the freefall

Interlude: The Council

  • The Jedi Council debated whether to involve themselves in an outright war against the Nihil on behalf of the Republic — a question that challenged the Jedi’s fundamental role as peacekeepers

Part Three: The Storm

Chapter 36

  • The admiral led the Republic fleet — alongside borrowed forces and the Jedi Star Cruiser — in a coordinated assault against the Nihil
  • Kassav’s crew simultaneously found themselves under attack by the very people they had tried to extort, who now wanted revenge

Chapter 37

  • Two Jedi attempted to rescue the last two hostages — until a swarm of Nihil ships appeared from nowhere, jumping in and out of hyperspace in ways that should have been impossible

Chapter 38

  • Kassav’s Tempest was under attack, but Marchion Ro — the Eye — provided hyperspace paths that allowed the Nihil to jump in and out at short distances, a terrifying tactical advantage that began to turn the tide of the battle

Chapter 39

  • Loden Greatstorm managed a remarkable feat — distracting the Nihil long enough to allow Indeera to escape with the son — before boarding the enemy ship himself to search for the father
  • He broke his leg in the attempt, then was knocked out by toxic gas when more Nihil forces boarded the ship

Chapter 40

  • The inhabitants of the system Kassav had extorted boarded his ship and came for revenge

Chapter 41

  • Marchion Ro confronted Lourna Dee, revealing how he had manipulated all of the Nihil from the very beginning — then used Loden Greatstorm’s lightsaber to kill the hostage he had never actually cared about saving

Chapter 42

  • Chancellor Lina Soh allowed the hyperspace routes to be reopened and launched a stimulus effort — steadfast in her conviction that the Republic could be a place where everyone could thrive together

Chapter 43

  • Marchion Ro used Kassav’s death to rally the remaining Nihil under his sole leadership — then visited his Jedi prisoner, Loden Greatstorm, and revealed his intent to use everyone around him to achieve his ultimate goal

Chapter 44

  • A grand celebration marked the opening of the Starlight Beacon — a symbol of the Republic’s commitment to expanding its reach and protecting all those within it — yet the threat is far from over, and only Marchion Ro knows what’s truly coming

Closing thoughts:

I really enjoyed this one — very interesting characters, a compelling concept, and genuinely great villains in the Nihil who aren’t your standard Sith or Dark Side users. It does a fantastic job setting up future installments of the High Republic saga

Nutshell:

Light of the Jedi launches the Star Wars High Republic era with a galaxy-shaking disaster and a terrifying new villain who isn’t a Sith. When the Legacy Run tears apart in hyperspace, it falls to the Jedi to hold the galaxy together — and in doing so, they unknowingly step into the crosshairs of Marchion Ro and the Nihil. A high-stakes, character-rich story that proves the Jedi are most compelling when the stakes are existential, and the enemy is something genuinely new.
