Opening thoughts:

I took a break from this series for the month of December because I felt like I was zooming through it. But I’m glad I waited because it was nice to return back to check in on the adventures of X, Michael, and the rest of the Hell Divers. I think the last book ended perfectly in a way where the series could have stopped. However, I love that the author set it up to also continue with more plot lines and characters to continue developing.

Key notes:

Prologue

• On the maiden voyage for Discovery with Michael, Magnolia, and Trey, they were ambushed by three Defectors
• Trey was killed before the other two were able to escape

Chapter 1

• X was charged with being king and his most important duty was to protect all of these assimilated people and help them assimilate with each other
• This new job he inherited was harder than his former job of keeping the airship afloat
• Right now the biggest threat to humanity wasn’t other humans or mutant creatures, but machines designed to kill them

Chapter 2

• The council of eight people convened in order to discuss what to do about the Defectors. They decided they needed to go on the offense as their main priority was protecting their home

Chapter 3

• X made last-minute decision to accompany the training of the new Hell Divers outside of the Vanguard Islands, and observed the new recruits

Chapter 4

• X miraculously managed to suit up and catch up with all of the commanders who were racing to save Ted, who recklessly disobeyed orders and jumped out of the ship
• Rhino was challenged by one of the new recruits and eventually put him in his place

Chapter 5

• X made a show of killing the captured Siren in front of the new recruits because he knew he had to prove himself in front of them 

Chapter 6

Chapter 7

• Les and the crew of the Discovery attempted to rescue the ship that was about to be lost to the storm until Officer Ada detached the cables and sabotaged the rescue

Chapter 8

• X had to decide what to do with Ada as well as the Cazador soldier who killed an engineer
• He decided to send a party to Rio de Janeiro to investigate and kill the Defectors

Chapter 9

Chapter 10

• Rhino managed to take out two people at the same time in the arena
• However, the boy of who was the son of the murdered man, jumped into the arena and got himself killed 

Chapter 11

• X looked into the archives of the old Cazadores records and their excursions. He also was pondering what to do with Ada

Chapter 12

• Les and Magnolia joined the Cazador transport crew to pick up the fuel. But then they were attacked by a giant two headed snake

Chapter 13

• Michael and Roger joined the fight and helped them survive against the snakes

Chapter 14

• The people back at the islands blamed X for not keeping them safe. On the Discovery, they reviewed the footage from Cricket and saw a gruesome scene

Chapter 15

• Rhino had a meeting with the other Cazador leaders to update them on the plan

Chapter 16

• X did a few training dives with the new recruits, which helped cleared his head

Chapter 17

• The worship was attacked by mutant sperm whales, but they managed to fight them off with the help of Discovery

Chapter 18

• Discovery continued the mission to Rio de Janeiro and Team Raptor dove down to the surface

Chapter 19

• Rhino went to the marketplace, which he hated to go to, in order to find Mac, a retired Cazador warrior

Chapter 20

• Michael managed to regroup with all of Team Raptor after they were split up
• Captain Les helped them out by luring away the Sirens and shooting them with Discovery’s weapons

Chapter 21

• X met with Rhino’s new recruits for the Barracudas for their assassination mission
• Magnolia’s crew continued to explore the island

Chapter 22

• Team Raptor fought off two mutant creatures the Cazadores called the Bone Beast
• Alexander was morally wounded. He stayed behind and sacrificed himself so that the rest of Team Raptor could get away

Chapter 23

• X had to decide what to do with the Ada as well as two survivors of the Lion crew that managed to make it back to the Vanguard Islands

Chapter 24

• Michael made it into the bunker and discovered that they were too late
• Back on Discovery, they were fixing up Cricket so that they could send it back out into the field
• The crew on Discovery managed to finally get data from the field, and discovered that three members of Team Raptor were killed because their beacons were off-line

Chapter 25

• X made a decision and let Ada go with some provisions into the wilderness alone before Rhino could kill her. Rhino was upset, but he let it go
• The Skin Walkers who were ambushing magnolias crew were actually Horn and his men, with dried flesh on their bodies
• Magnolia and Roger managed to escape as Cricket helped kill some of the enemies

Chapter 26

• X told Ada that he changed his mind about killing her, that if she survived and came back in five years, he would welcome her back with open arms
• He gave her a map to Florida where she would have the resources potentially to survive
• Michael, Sofia, Roger and Magnolia converged at the bunker and ambushed the Skin Walkers

Chapter 27

• They were betrayed by Isaiah, but somehow managed to survive except for Rhino who sacrificed himself to kill as many enemies as possible

Chapter 28

• There was an intense battle against the Sirens as Discovery picked up the Hell Divers and the 30 survivors they rescued
• The crew of the Discovery reported into X about their status, and that the survivors know how to shut down the Defectors

Closing thoughts:

Another fantastic addition. This actually might be my favorite installment of the series as I feel like there was a lot of payoff in terms of character development that has happened from the last five books. I also like the position that X and the other Hell Divers are in, with the tension and stakes escalating. I also enjoy how the other characters are playing main roles in advancing the story so that it’s not just X carrying the whole adventure.

Nutshell:

Newly crowned “King Xavier” needs to protect the Vanguard islands from both external and internal threats (Sirens, machine Defectors, rogue Cazadores, other humans), as well as continue the search for other survivors hiding out in undiscovered bunkers.
