The Vexed Generation: Magic 2.0, Book 6 by Scott Meyer

Synopsis:

“Mattie and Brewster are normal, typical 16-year-old twins who live with their normal, boring parents: Martin and Gwen Banks. Normal and boring, that is, until the day their father’s best friend shows up at their house – dressed in what appears to be a bathrobe.

The next thing Mattie and Brewster know, their parents are frozen like human statues in their living room, the guy in the bathrobe has vanished, and they need to find answers – fast.

The twins set off on a quest to discover the truth of their parents’ lives. Along the way they find secrets, lies, magic, time travel, strange new friends, stranger new enemies, and a really weird dirigible (which, they’re told repeatedly, is not a blimp). It is a twisted and bizarre trail that, they hope, will lead them to the man they blame for their parents’ peril:

Phillip.” -Audible

Opening thoughts:

I’m a bit excited about this book because it finally follows different characters besides Martin and Philip. I’m curious to see how the kids of two time travelers turn out, and who the main antagonist is for this one.

Key notes:

Chapter 1

  • Martin took his two 10-year-old twins to “work”

Chapter 2

  • After the kids ran across the street to see another magic show, Martin went and retrieved them and brought them home
  • He acknowledged that it was a bad idea and he should have listened to their mother

Chapter 3

  • The twins were now 16, and after a hard day at school, Philip made a surprise visit to their house and had a worrisome conversation with Martin and Gwen

Chapter 4

  • They were taken into protective custody by two agents and a civilian but then used their magical necklaces to escape

Chapter 5

  • They took their dad’s car and went to the secret theme park they went to as kids to find some answers

Chapter 6

  • They met the magicians Sid and Gilbert who agreed to explain everything to them

Chapter 7

  • Sid and Gilbert heard their story and decided to help them figure out what’s going on

Chapter 8

  • They told the twins that the reason people like them and their parents can do so-called magic is because they all live in a computer program, and they perform magic through coding and altering the file
  • The magicians said they’re going to take their time and hold off the investigation until they can teach the twins magic so that they can defend themselves and take care of themselves if needed

Chapter 9

Chapter 10

  • They showed the twins how to use their new equipment

Chapter 11

  • They learned how to levitate things with their wand and also how to fly

Chapter 12

  • They showed the twins the first encounter Martin had with Gwen and Philip to show that they were all old friends, and that Philip had been looking out for both of them for a long time

Chapter 13

  • They also taught the twins how to use their invisibility spell

Chapter 14

  • They learned the lesson all time travelers learn which is that trying to change the past or their past actions never works, after trying themselves and giving up

Chapter 15

  • The four of them went to Philip’s place and encountered Jeff, Roy, Tyler, and the butler

Chapter 16

  • They were watched by Tyler for the first two hours. After Roy came, they enacted their plan to use their pendants to escape and try to help out on their own

Chapter 17

  • They discovered the two Magnuses were behind everything and were tracking Philip’s teleportations

Chapter 18

  • Philip explained everything, and how their parents chose to live a normal life so that they could grow up better adjusted. And also that their situation of wizards raising kids has never happened before

Chapter 19

  • They found Jeff and Roy frozen and then went back to Leadchurch to regroup

Chapter 20

  • They encountered the Magnuses and tried to fight them off
  • Sid and Gilbert made it to the tavern on time to save the kids and forced the Magnuses to run away

Chapter 21

  • They all regrouped at Gary’s cave
  • They decided to visit Brit in Atlantis who was the best coder they knew

Chapter 22

  • Brit the Elder delivered them the counter spell which had been already done. They decided to try it out on Martin first

Chapter 23

  • They unfroze Martin and Gwen, caught them up with everything, and then unfroze the rest of them

Chapter 24

  • The twins went to the voting time and place to watch in secret with Sid and Gilbert

Chapter 25

  • The nomination and voting process started without Philip or a lot of other wizards

Chapter 26

  • Philip and the gang appeared to try and dissuade the Magnuses to not becoming dictators, but it didn’t work and the evil duo caught the group off guard and paralyzed them before flying off

Chapter 27

Chapter 28

  • They had to simultaneously protect the town from the fire and fight giant flaming chimps

Chapter 29

  • Magnus Rex was going to destroy a whole village until Jeff and Roy managed to find the Magnuses’s hiding spot

Chapter 30

Chapter 31

  • The twins managed to sneak up on and surprise Magnus

Chapter 32

  • They caught and banished the Magnuses to run a fan boat cruise tour business in shark-infested waters in Florida
  • The Banks family now embraced their ability to use magic since they didn’t need to hide and pretend anymore

Closing thoughts:

I enjoyed this book more than the last book. As expected, it was because they introduced a fresh pair of protagonists as well as antagonists. I also enjoyed how they were essentially mentors by Martin’s competition/magic rivals, Sid and Gilbert.

One thing I appreciate about Mattie and Brewster is that although they are not as tech-savvy as their parents, they’re also not as dumb as Martin and the other Camelot wizards.

One thing I thought was another uninteresting and lazy plot point was that if they had only contacted their aunt Brit, a lot of this could have been avoided. However, in typical Magic 2.0 fashion, of course they had to take the long route and do things the hard way.

Regardless, it was still a decent installment in the series and definitely one of the more entertaining stories.

Nutshell:

The Banks twins Mattie and Brewster have to learn magic in order to save their parents and figure out who is behind this nefarious plot.
